Capsa Obscura is a series of watercolours generated using artificial intelligence machine learning models.

The project explores the black box problem, one of the biggest challenges in AI today. It refers to the fact that we don't know how most AI-based tools work. Questions similar to these once arose with the invention of photography. Someone could easily capture a realistic representation of a scene by simply pressing a button on a camera. Likewise, photography and AI systems are technical images that allow image-makers and viewers to focus on inputs and outputs without considering their machinery.

This series of seemingly hand-made technical images explore the tension between the real and artificial and in doing so call into question the notion of image itself.
